Choosing Your Next Read: How the Three Tools Work Together

The QAPOE Public Domain Literature Library holds 98 Western and frontier titles, with Adventure Picaresque Fiction, Fantasy Juvenile Worlds, Historical Psychological Social Fiction, and Science Fiction Utopias each containing roughly a quarter of the collection. With so many options, the Book Finder, Compare Books, and Reading Tracker are designed to help you choose, compare, and plan—without rating literary quality. Each tool serves a distinct purpose, but they work best when used in sequence.

Start with the Finder to Build a Shortlist

The Book Finder lets you combine category, length, estimated reading time, chapter rhythm, sentence flow, and subjects to narrow the field. For instance, if you want a quick read with a strong cowboy theme, you might filter by 'Western stories' and 'quick' time commitment. The Finder will surface options like 'Where the West begins — Themes and Context' (id 310), a 9,830-word story that fits an evening.

Casting a wider net is equally easy. You can leave criteria at 'no preference' without penalizing any book, so the Finder is just as useful when you have only a vague sense of what you want.

Use Compare to Weigh the Finalists

Once you have two or three candidates, Compare Books puts them side by side. You can see word count, estimated reading time, text sections, sentence flow, chapter rhythm, and subjects. These metrics are descriptive, not judgments of quality, but they can reveal practical differences. A book with many short chapters and a low sentence-word average might feel brisk, while a title with long chapters and longer sentences may demand more sustained attention.

For example, comparing 'Bransford of Rainbow Range' (57,664 words) with 'Stepsons of Light' (59,016 words) shows they are similar in length, but their chapter rhythms and sentence flows differ. Such differences can help you decide which pace suits your current mood.

Plan Your Progress with the Tracker

After you choose, the Reading Tracker helps you plan your reading. It records progress in pages, with a current page, total pages, and a daily page goal. If the catalog lacks a fixed page count, it estimates one from the word count (dividing by 250). You can adjust the total to match your own edition.

The tracker calculates estimated remaining time and finish dates based on your daily goal. For instance, if a book is estimated at 300 pages and you read 20 pages a day, you can expect to finish in about 15 days. This simple planning makes long books less intimidating.
